Eric Smalley is Technology Editor for The Conversation, a non-profit media outlet that publishes articles written by academics and edited by journalists for a general audience.

He’s also a freelance writer and editor. He writes about science, technology, public policy, public health, international aid, sustainable development, social movements and journalism.

Eric has been a regular contributor to Wired, CNet and Columbia University’s Case Consortium @ Columbia. He’s also freelanced for Discover, Nature, Science, Scientific American, The Boston Globe, Data Informed, Computerworld, CIO, and InfoWorld, among other publications.

Eric has covered renewable energy, climate science, climate and energy policy, nanotechnology, quantum computing, robotics, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, cancer research, supercomputers, big data, the Internet, HIV-AIDS, aid to Haiti, and education in South Africa, among other topics.

Earlier, Eric co-founded Technology Research News. During its run as a weekly newswire and Web publication from 2000 to 2005, TRN grew to 650,000 page views per month and achieved a Google PageRank of 8, equal at the time to Discover and Scientific American. MIT’s Technology Review carried TRN’s news brief feed on its website from 2003 to 2004.

Eric lives in Boston with his wife, journalist and user interface/usability expert Kim Patch. They play in Louder Than Milk, among other bands. Here’s his remembrance of his father, the sculptor David Smalley.
